Leila Alaoui:

She is a French-Moroccan artist born in 1982. Leila Alaoui studied photography at the City University of New York and her work explores the construction of identity, cultural diversity and migration in the Mediterranean region. She has used photography and video to express
social realities through a visual language on the borderline between documentary
documentary and the visual arts. Since 2009, her work has been exhibited in various countries, including the Institut du Monde Arabe and the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, the Konsthall in Malmoe, Sweden, the Palacio Nacional de la Citadelle in Cascais, Portugal, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in Canada, and the Fondaco dei Tedeschi at the Venice Biennale in 2022. Alaoui's humanitarian work also includes several photographic assignments for major NGOs such as the Danish Refugee Council, Search for Common Ground and UNHCR. In January 2016, while working
working for an Amnesty International commission on women's rights in Burkina Faso, Leila Alaoui was seriously injured in the terrorist attacks in Ouagadougou. She did not recover and died on 18 January 2016. The Leila Alaoui Foundation was created to preserve her work, defend her values, and inspire and support artists working to
human dignity.
