Attend the screening of the documentary ‘L'énigme de la grotte des fées’ at the Salle Henri Salengro in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence on Friday 24 January at 6.30pm.
Watch the film by archaeologists Marc Azéma and Jean Guilaine and find out more about the 5 collective underground tombs at Fontvieille.
More than 5,000 years ago, the farming peoples who lived around the hills now known as Castellet, Montmajour and Montagne de Cordes dug collective tombs in the rock, using stone tools. They covered them with stone slabs, also weighing several dozen tonnes.
These grandiose and moving artificial caves are dotted around the Mediterranean, but the four sisters of Fontvieille are exceptional. These crypts contained human bodies accompanied by offerings (jewellery, weapons, pottery). They were designed to protect the deceased but also to glorify them, and were used for over 1,000 years.
