Midsummer bonfire

Traditions and folklore

After the success of the first edition in 2023, Saint-Étienne du Grès is once again organising a festive occasion around the Midsummer fire, to keep the flame of tradition, already alive and well in the community, burning even brighter.

Midsummer bonfire
Mairie St Etienne du Grès

Saint-Étienne du Grès, a village on fire for Saint-Jean.
A chance to get together in the heart of the village to celebrate summer and the fine Provencal traditions so dear to the hearts of the Grésouillais. On the programme: a chat, a balèti, a torchlit parade before the long-awaited St John's bonfire.
The 2024 edition will take place over two days, with the flame arriving from Canigou on Sunday.
Join us on Saturday afternoon for two complementary memoirs: Nadine Guigue on bread and Philippe Luchesi on the harvest. This will be followed by a musical ‘appétif’ led by ‘Li Festijaires’, who will then perform the ‘balèti’ that follows.
On Sunday, after picking up the flame in Arles, the pegoulado will take to the streets of the village in the early evening before lighting the bonfire at around 10pm in the Place de la Mourgue.
Throughout the weekend, Lou Riban Esteven will be on hand to liven up the festivities with their dances.
