Exposition Fontvieille, détour par le Moyen Âge
Château de Montauban

This superb building, with its monumental 19th century façade adjoining a 17th century farmhouse, was the home of the Ambroy family who welcomed Alphonse Daudet during his stays in Provence. Daudet regularly visited the house with his wife Julia from 1863 onwards, at the invitation of his cousins. It was the setting for many of his novels. Now a museum centre dedicated to the history of the village, the Château de Montauban is the forerunner of a vast cultural project which already includes the exhibition Fontvieille, détour par le Moyen Âge, dedicated to the archaeological discoveries of the area.
The exhibition has three main themes: people and places of power, society and economic activities in towns and the countryside, and the invisible between spirituality and popular beliefs. Nearly 350 archaeological objects unearthed in and around Fontvieille are presented. Most of them evoke the memory of modest daily life: agro-pastoral tools, crafts, game tables, scissors, earthenware dishes.... The scenography gives pride of place to images through a very rich selection of unpublished iconographic sources.
