The carnival was created more than twenty years ago by the people of Saint-Rémy. They created the character of La Chauche Vieille, the emblematic figure of Carnival in Saint-Rémy, inspired by Mistral's witch and healer, Taven. Chaucha, in Provençal, means ‘to trample’. In the early years, the chauchade (parade) began with the exit of the Chauche and Caramantran (the monster) from the sewers of Saint-Rémy. The Chauche is there to herald the arrival of spring, and Caramantran embodies all the evils suffered during the year, in particular the evils of political power. That's why he must be judged.
